Reflecting on the Amazing Goodness of God

I just finished a book on “The Rise and Fall of the West,” but the biggest takeaway of all was the amazing contributions that came by the followers of Jesus over two thousand years upon the world economy, science, medicine, and civil liberties. Wow! What Jesus has done for the world is nothing short of a-maz-ing!

Folks. . .  Our good God has blessed the whole world with lots and lots of His goodnesses. Yes, we receive spiritual blessings, but let’s not forget these material blessings. Let’s not miss any of it. Let us respond with warm hearts of gratitude this thanksgiving. Let’s turn back to Him. Let’s trust Him. Let’s recognize His goodness, and raise our hands in praise.

Here’s the order of it.

  • First we recognize that we have received something good — a blessing.
  • Second we must realize that this good thing must have come from God, who is good all the time.
  • And then, we respond to His goodness with thanksgiving.

As you look toward tomorrow, I'd like to encourage you with these 3 Thanksgiving Read-Aloud Stories That Display the Goodness of God. Hopefully these incredible accounts open our eyes just a little bit more to the good things God has given all of us. This thanksgiving, would you consider reading these accounts around the dinner table?

Included stories:

  • The Greatest Technological Breakthroughs of All Time
  • The Greatest Medical Breakthroughs of All Time
  • The Greatest Breakthroughs in Civil Liberty in World History

A Thanksgiving Hymn

As you and your family reflect on the amazing goodness of our great God this season, take a moment to consider (or even sing together!) the words of this powerful hymn from Thomas O. Chisholm:

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside

Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning, new mercies I see
All I have needed, Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me

Two Books that Document God’s Goodness in History

You can read more on the mercies of God and the blessings of God in the Western world in the Generations' publication The Story of Freedom and my latest book Epoch: The Rise and Fall of the West. These are great read-aloud books for your whole family. Above all, may you be reminded of the mercy and goodness God has shown in your own life this past year - to Him be the glory, great things He has done!

Happy Thanksgiving!
