Two Kinds of People

Proverbs 3:33–35

The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but He blesses the habitation of the just.

Surely He scorns the scorners: but He gives grace unto the lowly.

The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

There are two kinds of people in the world--the Bible calls them“the wicked” and “the just.” How would you distinguish between these two kinds of people? While there are many ways to define these two groups, one of the best definitions is found in the word “scorner.” As described in the Book of Proverbs, the scorner will not listen to rebuke (13:1) and rejects people who try to correct him (15:12). He is also a proud man, self-satisfied with what he knows (21:24). The “rebellious teenager” or “juvenile delinquent” is precisely what is figured in this word “scoffer.” Refusing to listen to God or his parents, he will not be corrected by the Word of God.

But the just man listens to the Word of God and takes it seriously. He will live the life of repentance because he will be corrected by that Word. This is the difference between the wicked and the just. Wherever that just man lives, wherever he works, and wherever he interacts with others—these “habitations” will enjoy the blessing of God. Corporations and cities blessed with the presence of godly, humble men will generally see God’s blessings attend their efforts. Meanwhile, the wicked scorners will be cursed, and God will snub them even as they snub Him. To have God reject you means something because He has the sovereign authority and power to follow through on His curse. As the years go by, the wicked will see their families cursed unto the third and fourth generation of those who hate God (Exod. 20:5).

Although the meek and the humble are objects of spite and derision for proud and arrogant people, this will not always be the case. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly promises eternal glory to the humblest saints who served Him in spite of onerous persecution at the hands of powerful politicians. But what will happen to the powerful, proud politicians who refused to bow the knee to Christ and follow His Law-word?  Eternal shame and punishment in hellfire, where the worm never dies and fire is never quenched.

Family Discussion Questions:

1. Contrast the fate of the wicked, scorning fool with that of the wise, just, and humble man.

2. What sort of people are we? Do we live humble lives, or are we the proud people that are constantly fishing for compliments and bucking for promotions?
