The accused in the San Diego synagogue shootings was a member of a reformed presbyterian church, and his father an elder in the congregation, according to reports. The question Christianity Today asks is, “Who is to blame?” We tackle the nature vs. nurture question again, but caution against weighing too heavily on the social/environmental causes. We take a look at the Bowe Bergdahl, Paul Hill, and John T. Earnest stories, and draw in Scriptural explanations and warn against the secular attacks on church teaching and the slippery, sweeping generalizations about “provocative” language.
