COVID Hasn't Forced Us To Homeschool

July 28, 2020

The times are changing. The whole world is changing. When it comes to raising children, this is the not the 1980s anymore.

We are in the age of pandemics, internet and smartphones, and transgendered six year old children. We are in the age of social upheaval. We have dealt with political instability in the history of this country, but never such social instability.

Meanwhile, online learning is increasing.  Brick and mortar education is fading.

All of the above are not really debated points. These are becoming common fact.

But to be honest, COVID hasn’t affected us much.  My family has been homeschooling for 50 years now — since my mom starting homeschooling me in Portland, Oregon in 1969. The government never really forced us to homeschool our kids.  Actually, it was just the opposite.  Homeschooling was against the government’s orders in many cases back in the 1960s and 1970s. Yet, over the years, we have changed.  We have learned much more about God’s plan for the discipleship of our children in a secular age.

Every Christian parent in America right now is asking the question, “How do I raise my children in this age?”

Well, for starters, we are not going back to school this year. This should be obvious to most of our constituents.

But, the bigger question is “What does education and discipleship for our children look like now?” I believe the Lord has opened up an opportunity for a better discipleship for our children in these changing times.  It is an opportunity for us to reassess priorities. This is a restart for our family life. Let’s take advantage of it!

How to Make Homeschooling a Real Blessing, Not a Bust!

The homeschooling movement has grown from 3,000,000 to 60,000,000 over the last five months, and the results are mixed.  Although homeschooling can be a blessing to some, it can be a bust for others.

I think it is safe to say that every Christian parent wants the following for their children:

  1. That they would know Jesus.
  2. That they would experience the best home life possible, by the grace of God.
  3. That they would receive a good education.
  4. That they would be prepared for life, and for the changes and challenges that lie before them.

In order to address some of the BIG QUESTIONS parents are facing about homeschooling this year, we have pulled together as much generational experience in home education and home discipleship as we could get, for a FREE ONLINE WORKSHOP that's kicking off next week (August 4-7, 9am PST)!

Israel Wayne, Shari McMinn, Mike Donnelly, and myself (Kevin Swanson) have a combined experience of 140 years with home education. I couldn’t think of a better mix to present a vision for homeschooling in the next generation. Here's a quick overview of what we'll be covering:

  • Day 1 (August 4th, 9am PST) This Is Not School: How to Stop Schooling and Start Discipling + Homeschooling FAQ Q&A with Kevin Swanson
  • Day 2 (August 5th, 9am PST) Congrats! Your Kids Are Already Learning Worldview...but Which One? + Q&A with Israel Wayne
  • Day 3 (August 6th, 9am PST) 5 Veteran Strategies to Homeschool with Sanity + Nuts & Bolts Q&A with Shari McMinn
