3 Thanksgiving Read-Aloud Stories That Display The Greatness of God

November 23, 2022

God’s works are so great, so many, and so various in nature, that we will never run out of examples to fuel our praise and thanksgiving.

This Thanksgiving, Psalm 107 is a helpful and timely reminder. This Psalm recounts God’s great works of redemption in 40+ verses. It contains the repeated refrain “Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!” (Ps. 107:8)

In the spirit of Psalm 107, it is fitting that we turn to the pages of history, and catalog a few of God’s great works, perhaps unknown to many, but works that are “great” and are to be studied by all who take pleasure in them (Ps. 111:1-2).

As you prepare for the holiday tomorrow, I'd like to encourage you with these 3 Thanksgiving Read-Aloud Stories from the History of Missions. Hopefully these incredible accounts open our eyes to God’s wonderful works of redemption and salvation, and help spark a spirit of thanksgiving in your home this week!

These short stories include:

  • How Jesus Saved the Eskimos
  • How Jesus Saved Brownlow North
  • How Jesus Delivered an Armenian Christian Family from Harm

As Christians, Thanksgiving is a providential opportunity to declare our dependence on our God and find encouragement as we reflect on His goodness to us and our families.

After printing out these 3 Thanksgiving Read-Aloud Stories from the History of Missions, why not read one or two aloud during the Thanksgiving meal? Ask questions. Invite feedback.

A Thanksgiving Hymn

As you and your family reflect on the amazing greatness of our God this season, take a moment to consider (or even sing together!) the words of this powerful hymn:

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near,
Join me in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee!
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee;
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
If with His love He befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!
Let the amen sound from His people again;
Gladly forever adore Him.

A Series that Documents God’s Greatness in History

You can read more stories of the greatness of God in our Taking the World for Jesus series, a history course that focuses on the magnificent works of God around the world. These are great read-aloud books for your whole family.

Above all, seek to give God the glory He deserves this season.

Happy Thanksgiving!
